Ask any fan of classic rock and progressive rock to name a band or performer from the last 50 years that has left them completely awestruck and you’ll get the same answer most of the time: Pink Floyd. The revered English group broke up long ago, but their music remains a staple at classic rock radio, and band main men David Gilmour and Roger Waters continue to work today, with Waters currently in the midst of a lengthy North American tour.
Carrying the torch for the collective works of Pink Floyd are the members of The Australian Pink Floyd Show, road warriors who’ve been bringing their highly-regarded Pink Floyd tribute show to fans the world over for nearly three decades. So good at interpreting Pink Floyd, The Australian Pink Floyd Show even got invited by Gilmour himself to play at his birthday party.
Also in the middle of a substantial North American tour, The Australian Pink Floyd Show is scheduled to perform Aug. 24 in the ballroom at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. In honor of that appearance we handed the talking stick to Aussie Floyd’s guitarist and lead singer Steve Mac who told us what fans can expect at the Scottsdale show as well as answering the age old question “Which one’s Pink?” Mac’s commentary below was given by email exclusively to AXS.com.
AXS: What is the set list like this time out? Are you focusing on a particular era or certain albums?
Steve Mac: We are celebrating The Dark Side of the Moon album this year by performing it in its entirety. The set also includes Pink Floyd’s greatest hits and some surprises, so there’s something in it for everybody. The response has been phenomenal.
AXS: After all these years of perfecting your tribute, are there still songs or bits of songs that give you fits?
SM: There are certainly many challenges within the show and that goes for everyone involved in producing it. We are lucky to be working with some very creative and talented people who are great at what they do. It has become a well-oiled machine but it’s never easy.
AXS: Have any of you seen the Roger Waters “Us + Them” show? If so, was there any aspect of the show that gave you any ideas for your tribute show, and how so?
SM: Our management team flew to America to see Roger Waters. We are always looking for ways to improve the show and keeping up with the latest technology and production techniques is very important to us. We try to learn from the masters.
AXS: Your North American tour schedule is packed and you have very few travel or off days. When was the last time you had a chance to do something tourist-y, and what was it?
SM: Whilst in New York a group of us went to visit the USS Intrepid Museum, Times Square, and Ground Zero to pay our respects. We are also calling in to Graceland on our way to Houston. We’ve been coming to America since 2003 and it’s the first time our touring schedule has allowed us the opportunity to see Graceland. We do try and make the most of the limited opportunities we have as America has so many fascinating things to see.
AXS: You’ve been doing the tribute shows since 1988, meaning that your 30th anniversary is fast approaching. Have you thought about how you’d like to celebrate the milestone?
SM: We have toured every year for the past 29 years so someone suggested we should celebrate by having a year off, but I know we’d all get bored after a while. Next year’s tour theme will evolve around “Time.” We do have a few special things lined up but we are keeping them to ourselves until next year so watch this space!
AXS: Gotta ask: Does anyone ever ask you “Which one’s Pink?” and what is your response?
SM: We do get asked that question often and our answer is always the same: It’s Skippy, our giant inflatable pink Kangaroo.
